Turning Toxic Waste Into Critical Metals: How FAST Metals Found Its Footing in Connecticut

Sumedh Gostu came to the Yale Innovation Summit in 2025 with no Yale connections and no fundraising agenda. What happened next is a case study in what a focused, high-quality ecosystem can do. 
 



A Million-Ton Problem

Every year, the global aluminum industry generates 150-180 million tons of toxic waste known as red mud, a byproduct so hazardous that it represents a multibillion-dollar liability for the mining companies forced to store it. For over six decades, there has been no profitable way to deal with it.

Sumedh Gostu, founder and CEO of FAST Metals, believes he has cracked the code.

"We have a cool technology to extract rare earth elements, iron, aluminum, and titanium, completely eradicating the liability of this waste," Gostu explained. The process can be engineered and deployed directly on-site, eliminating the need to transport hazardous waste across borders — a meaningful advantage as the U.S. works to reshore critical metals production.

Gostu's path to FAST Metals began nearly a decade ago. "This was actually my PhD work eight years ago," he said, describing research conducted at Colorado School of Mines and WPI. After years in operational, research and commercial roles in the mining industry — most recently at Glencore, the world's largest commodity trading firm — Gostu left to license his own research and build a company from scratch.

An Unplanned Stop at the Summit

FAST Metals' Connecticut story started almost by accident. Living in Stamford while working in New York City, Gostu had never heard of Yale's climate innovation programming, led by the Yale Center for Business and the Environment team, until he walked into the Yale Innovation Summit in 2025 — with no Yale connections and no plan to fundraise.

Over a beer, he struck up a conversation with Staff Sheehan PhD ’15, a fellow founder (Project Omega) who was just beginning to build his own venture in nuclear energy. The exchange was informal. Sheehan needed an introduction; Gostu had one to offer. In return, Sheehan introduced him to Eric Rubenstein ’04, Founding Managing Partner of New Climate Ventures and an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Yale Ventures,  and to the team at Connecticut Innovations(CI), including Konstantine Drakonakis a managing director at CI.

"It's good to fundraise when you're not looking to fundraise," Gostu said. "Getting in touch with the right investor is always a challenge, and I think that's what the Innovation Summit solved."

That single conversation set off a chain of events that took about a year to fully materialize. New Climate Ventures led FAST Metals' pre-seed round. Connecticut Innovations participated alongside them. The Yale SOM student run Yale Meng Impact Fund and its Chief Investment Officer, Spencer Burget, joined as well — even after the round was oversubscribed.

"I really liked how they [Meng Fund] conducted the diligence, so I wanted to give the students a chance to be part of our cap table," Gostu said.

At this year's Summit, Gostu and FAST Metal’s Chief of Staff Shane Sethi ’05 returned winning a second-place finish in the Climate Track pitch competition and a golden ticket to ClimateHaven, a New Haven-based climate tech incubator.

Quality Over Quantity

Gostu is no stranger to the climate and innovation conference circuit, from Yale Innovation Summit, to Houston Energy and Climate Startup Week to New York Climate Week. But he draws a sharp distinction between those events and what he found at Yale.

"There's a lot more meaningful networking time," he said of typical industry conferences. "What I found is if you have good quality time with the right person, that conversion rate is higher. The Yale Innovation Summit and Houston Energy and Climate Startup Week were some of the best events I've been to, because the three or four people I met were actually very influential and very helpful — not just on the investment side, but in understanding the path ahead and connecting me to the right people."

That recalibration, he said, has changed how he chooses which events to prioritize going forward.

Built — and Growing — in Connecticut

In the year since his first Summit appearance, FAST Metals has grown from a one-person operation to a six-person team, secured industry investment, and landed a paid pilot customer in Florida.  

The company is incorporated in Delaware and headquartered in Connecticut, and Gostu sees the state playing an increasingly strategic role as FAST Metals scales — particularly given its concentration of defense manufacturers.

"One of our key products is rare earth oxides, including scandium, and a key customer there is the defense industry," he said, citing Pratt & Whitney, Raytheon, and the submarine manufacturers based in the state. The company is now in conversations with Connecticut Innovations about siting an additional pilot facility in-state to serve those downstream defense customers.

While the most chemically intensive stages of FAST Metals' process may ultimately need to sit closer to aluminum-producing regions like the Gulf Coast, Gostu envisions Connecticut anchoring the company's headquarters and finished-product operations for the long term.

An Ecosystem That Punches Above Its Weight

For Gostu, FAST Metals' progress is a case study in how a small but tightly connected ecosystem can accelerate a startup faster than larger, more crowded markets.

"It's not about quantity, it's about quality," he said.

The company has an ask for the ecosystem that helped get it here: introductions to downstream defense customers, and additional pilot opportunities in Connecticut.

"We were accelerated as part of this ecosystem," Gostu said. "Now we're looking for that next set of connections to help us keep growing here."
