Alibaba Co-Founder Joe Tsai ’86, ’90 J.D. to Keynote 2026 Yale Innovation Summit
Yale Ventures is pleased to announce that Joe Tsai ’86, ’90 JD, co-founder and chairman of Alibaba Group, will be featured in a plenary session at the 2026 Yale Innovation Summit, taking place May 27–28, 2026.
A graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School, Tsai is a global leader in technology, investment, and philanthropy. As a co-founder of Alibaba, he helped build the company from an early B2B marketplace into one of the world’s largest and most impactful global businesses spanning e-commerce, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence. The company developed Qwen, one of the leading open-source generative AI models, and is among the small number of companies on the frontier of AI development.
In recent remarks, he has challenged prevailing narratives around artificial intelligence, urging leaders and founders to focus less on model benchmarks and compute scale and more on real-world application, productivity, and long-term value creation.
In addition to his business leadership, Tsai is one of Yale’s most significant supporters of innovation and interdisciplinary education. Through the Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation, he established the Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking at Yale (Tsai CITY), a central hub in Yale’s innovation community that supports students across disciplines to address real-world problems; the Joseph C. Tsai Leadership Program at Yale Law School, which prepares law students to tackle complex global challenges through cross-sector leadership and a commitment to a more equitable and just future; and the Wu Tsai Institute, focusing on understanding human cognition and brain science. He has also supported the Paul Tsai China Center at Yale Law School, Yale’s Department of Computer Science, and Yale Athletics. As a former Yale varsity lacrosse player, he is a big supporter of Yale men’s and women’s lacrosse programs and provided the gift for the Tsai Lacrosse Field House.
