AI-powered risk assessment tool for aortic aneurysms: Enhancing clinical decision-making for aortic-repair surgery

Aortic aneurysm is a common cause of sudden death s. A staggering 8% of sudden deaths are found on CT Scan autopsy to be caused by ascending aortic dissection (internal splitting of the wall of the aorta). Current Societal Guidelines (both US and European) for deciding when to replace the aorta to prevent dissection are based on our Yale Aortic Institute data. We recomment aortic diameter (> 5 cm) as the criterion to operate. However, a "size-only" criterion ignores many other important data points, which we have outlined in recent publications. Specifically there are 11 other measurable criteria that need to be brought to bear. In this project, we use AI to make an overall assessment based on all these criteria (another 120 pieces of EPIC data). With this AI application, we have substantially improved the accuracy of prediction of impending aortic events. We have created an initial on-line tool predictive tool that has been  enthusiastically received in recent Societal presentations.
